Has experience with trouble shooting hardware on all bus types from end-user devices to industrial equipment, RAID controllers, and network equipment. Has experience performing data recovery on failing or failed hard drives as well as RAID 5's that have lost more than on drive.
Notable Achievements
- While working at Loral, replaced and greatly improved their method of installing system images on desktop and laptop computers.
- After an outbreak of the FunLove Virus at Loral due a period of vulnerability caused by McAfee, wrote a single script that terminated the virus and immunized systems in lieu of actual virus protection. Executed the script remotely on 2,000 machines and within an hour the threat was eliminated thus saving the desktop services team hundreds of hours of work.
- Simlabs, the Satellite Simulation Department of SS/L, sold Linux systems containing simulators of actual products to SS/L customers. There was a problem, however; a Windows application was required to interface the simulation. Because of this, each Sim System was bundled with VM-Ware and Windows NT, which cost an extra $600 per unit. Suggested they use WINE (see below) leading to a savings of $600 per unit and $36,000 on one shipment.
- While working with GGRC's "Consumer Advocate for the Developmentally Disabled," helped test, select and improve software and hardware for Developmentally Disabled computer users. Helped design a limited vocabulary dictionary for "Dragon Dictate" (which increased the speed and accuracy of this speech recognition program) and also designed a simple formula for creating a $10 pointer that surpassed $1500 devices.
Personal Projects and Interests
- Worked on a project for De Anza Junior College to replace desktops with low-power, diskless Unix thin clients
- Investigating the possibility of using Mac OSX as a diskless/embedded OS
- Participate in the WINE community. WINE is a Win32 API that allows Windows applications to run under Linux
- Developing a Linux server that serves Windows applications running under WINE to Mac OSX with X11 services
- Built a Linux Distribution that includes X11 but does not exceed 10MB, for use with diskless, 486 X-Terminals
- Run a registered domain (Coreyfro.com) out of my home. Has the usual suite of Internet services as well as Samba
- Participated in Linux From Scratch, a project dedicated to the customization and optimization of Linux OS
- Volunteer for Burning Man yearly to configure and install a redundant and secure 802.11b wireless network. This network covers key areas important for Burning Man ticket sales, administration, and safety. The Internet pipeline is feed by a pair of 802.11b links from the nearby town of Gerlach, NV, over 10 miles away.
